US Sailing Smallboat Instructor Courses

US Sailing Smallboat Instructor Courses: All of the prior four-day Level 1 instructor certification courses have been converted into two sections because of COVID-19: a guided online portion for 10-days is followed by a later in-person evaluation for 2-days.

If your junior sailing program is hiring staff for this summer who will need their certification for US Sailing Instructor or Safe Powerboat Handling, advise them to sign up promptly because each course site has limited enrollment. Courses will become available as trainers are assigned. Please advise instructor candidates to read the course descriptions and view the calendar on the US Sailing website.

  • Two-day Safe Powerboat Handling courses at SUNY Maritime in the Bronx are now being scheduled and may be viewed here
  • As an alternative, taking a one-day State Boating Safety course now will prepare an instructor candidate to take a one-day Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling course when available at SUNY. Both NY State and Connecticut have classroom-style boating safety courses available now, mainly online.
  • Or contact SUNY to arrange a customized one- or two-day Safe Powerboat Handling course at your own club.

The currently available courses and description of other training required for instructors employed by JSA of LIS junior sailing programs, may be seen at http://bit.ly/JSAInstructorTraining

The available courses listed by date may also be viewed at JSA’s Certification Course Calendar listing
