Rocky Point Club held their annual Breakwater Cup Regatta

Special thanks to Greta Spiess for the photos and Regatta Report from this years Breakwater Cup Regatta held by Rocky Point Yacht Club in Old Greenwich, CT!

Rocky Point Club held their annual Breakwater Cup Regatta on Monday, July 22nd, beginning in the morning with a Green Fleet Opti series of races, followed by an afternoon of Feva and Pixel races.

Participating in the Green Fleet Opti series were sailors from Belle Haven Club, Indian Harbor Yacht Club, Noroton Yacht Club, Rocky Point Club, and Stamford Yacht Club.  For the afternoon of Feva and Pixel racing were sailors from Indian Harbor Yacht Club and Rocky Point Club.

After a heatwave of a weekend, rain and possible thunderstorms were in the forecast for race day.  Fortunately, it turned out to be the perfect day for our sailors.

The morning began with light winds, making it a comfortable sail (and tow) out to the course.

While the light winds were welcomed, the strong current made crossing the starting line a challenge for some of our first-timers.

Eventually they made it across and once their sails were filled, they were off to the windward mark – an inflatable swan. Overall, it was a perfect race series for beginners – a triangle course marked with inflatable swans, light winds, and a focus on fun.   Nonetheless, there were still protests raised to the Race Committee. The winds built throughout the morning allowing for a total of three races to be completed.

Following a morning of hard work on the course, the sailors came in for a cookout of hamburgers and hotdogs, followed by awards and a raffle.

Congratulations to our top 3 finishers:

  • 1st place: Christina Rodriguez of Rocky Point Club
  • 2nd place: Thomas Oliver of Indian Harbor Yacht Club
  • 3rd place: Liam Casey of Noroton Yacht Club

Once our Optis were fed and the awards were given, we were back out with our double-handed sailors for Feva and Pixel races.

With each race, the winds grew stronger, making for a competitive and challenging afternoon of sailing.

After rounding the windward mark, spinnakers flew making for a beautiful view.

Following three races, the overall leaders for the regatta were as follows:

  • 1st place: Coco whittle/Liana Rodriguez of Rocky Point Club
  • 2nd place: Hadden Wood/Harrison Kittel of Indian Harbor Yacht Club
  • 3rd place: Anja Coffee/Tabitha Cook of Rocky Point Club

Congratulations to all sailors that participated in Rocky Point’s 2019 Breakwater Cup Regatta.
