Junior Sailing during Fall 2021

A variety of junior sailing sessions are available in Western Long Island Sound during the fall season of 2021. Here are some that we know about as of early September:

Name: WaterFront Center Fall Sailing

Boats: Optimist, Club 420 and J/105
Descrip: The WaterFront Center, 1 West End Ave, Oyster Bay, NY. The sessions begin in early September on various days of the week and include After-School Optimist Sailing (for beginners and race teams) and High School Sailing in the Club 420. WFC’s Big Boat Race Team uses a newly acquired J/105 to take racing a step up from double-handed boats, with 8 to 10 young sailors on board working together as a big boat team in positions like helm, navigator/tactician, main, jib and spinnaker trimmers, pit, mast, and bow.
– Optimist Beginner: Sundays (5 weeks): 9am-12pm starting Sept 12
– Optimist Race Intro: Sundays (5 weeks): 9am-12pm starting Sept 12
– Optimist Race: Mondays (8 weeks): 3:30pm-6:00pm starting Sept 13
– High School Practice in C420s: Session 1: Sept 7th – Sept 30th (4 weeks); Session 2: Oct 5th – Oct 28th (4 Weeks)
– J/105 Big Boat team:  Monday and Friday (8 Weeks): 3:30pm-6:30pm starting Aug 30.

Boats: 29er skiff
Descrip: Cedar Point YC, 1 Bluff Pt, Westport, CT.  Tino Galan, head coach for CPYC’s junior program and accomplished  29er sailor, is offering 29er training clinics in collaboration with the 29er New England Skiff Squad. The clinics are designed to introduce experienced youth dinghy sailors from Optis, 420s, Fevas and other classes to the exciting world of skiff sailing in the 29er, help pair up with partners as skipper and crew, and give support to get to the next level, including opportunities for after-school training, travel to regattas, and winter training in Florida. The clinics on Saturdays and Sundays from 9/18 – 10/31 are open to the public and can accommodate a wide range of goals and levels of commitment.

Descrip: Cedar Point YC, 1 Bluff Pt, Westport, CT. The sessions beginning in early September are open to the public. CPYC’s head coach, Tino Galan will teach two levels, beginner and advanced, on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. The program is very flexible, so sailors may sign up for individual sessions any time from 8/31 – 10/1.

Descrip: SUNY Maritime College Waterfront, 6 Pennyfield Avenue, Bronx, NY
– After School Adventure Sailing: 6th to 8th graders enjoy recreation and instruction aboard a variety of boats – dinghies, catamarans and keelboats. Participants will learn seamanship and sailing skills, learn to work in teams, meet new friends and explore the East River.
– High School Sailing: Learn to sail, race and gain the skills to compete at local, regional or even national level regattas. SUNY Maritime College provides everything needed to participate including sailboats (420s, FJs and Keelboats), coaches, safety boats, and life jackets. Sailors from multiple schools will be combined based on skill level, have an opportunity to sail with different partners, and may attend regattas as part of a composite team.
