2022 Malcolm McIntyre Team Race at SUNY Maritime
The 79th Edition of the JSA of LIS Team Race Championship for the Malcolm McIntyre Trophy was raced over the weekend of July 30-31, 2022, at SUNY Maritime College. This classic college-style event brought seven teams from JSA of LIS member clubs together to battle it out on the East River, underneath the Throgs Neck Bridge. Included in this year’s event were teams from American YC, Cedar Point YC , Manhasset Bay YC, Noroton YC, Orient YC, and Pequot YC.
Saturday morning started off with a team racing clinic on shore, led by this year’s event college coaches Johnny Norfleet from Fordham University and Zach Runci from SUNY Maritime College. The teams then hit the water for a full day of team racing in a beautiful 10-14 knot northwesterly breeze. A full rotation was completed. Sunday began with an in-depth three hour shore clinic complete with video analysis and playbook review of Saturday’s races. As the afternoon breeze filled in from the south, the sailors raced in a series of exciting 10-12 knot knockout rounds. In the end it was the team from Noroton YC who were crowned as the 2022 McIntyre Team Race Champions, followed in 2nd place by Cedar Point YC, and American YC Team 1 in 3rd place. The full regatta results may be viewed here.
We would like to thank SUNY Maritime for the use of their boats and facility and their continued support. Thanks also goes out to our coaches Johnny Norfleet and Zach Runci, and to our umpires John Eastman, Vanessa Lahrkamp, TJ Danilek, and Maisie MacGillivray. Also thanks to the parent volunteers, Ted Gillman, Hugo Souza, and Pedro Lorson for their help on the water. Finally, thanks to all of the competitive junior sailors and the coaches from the JSA member clubs for their support throughout the event, on and off the water. We hope to see you all back at the McIntyre Team Race again next summer!
