JSA LIS Head Instructor Workshop 2022
The 2022 Head Instructor Workshop that was held on Thursday June 9, 2022, at Larchmont Yacht Club resumed the in-person format to enhance the exchange of ideas among head instructors and other program leaders, such as directors and senior staff.
Head instructors and junior program directors were invited to attend this workshop designed specifically for them. Program chairs were also welcome, along with those on the path to becoming a head instructor or program director.

– Moderators: Kevin Broome, Sailing Director at American Yacht Club, US Sailing National Faculty and Instructor Representative to the JSA Board; and Henry Millette, Sailing Director at Indian Harbor Yacht Club, Greenwich Country Day School Sailing Team Coach, and Instructor Representative to the JSA Board.
– Presenters included: Jane Millman – Naval Academy Basic Sail Training Director, US Sailing Instructor Trainer & National Faculty; Solvig Sayre – Head Coach at St. Francis Yacht Club, former Olympic Development team athlete; Dr. Tim Herzog – Sports Psychologist who specializes in sailing, US Instructor Trainer, and former Sailing Director; Nadine Dubina – Character Coach at United States Military Academy, West Point; former Coach Developer at United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee; Emily Hill – Irish Teacher, Sailing Professional, and former Head Instructor at JSA clubs.
– Their topics included: What does it mean to be a leader? Lessons learned and ideas about running a successful program that keeps kids in the sport. Some amazing team building ideas; Things I wish I had known before being a Head Instructor; The mental side of managing a team and a program; Things all Head Instructors should know: How to run a successful Instructor Training week; Pooling resources – what we can do for one another this summer to achieve common goals.
