2025 Pequot Invitational Regatta on July 10-11
written by Erin Wojdaszka
The Pequot Invitational Regatta sailed into Southport CT on July 10th and 11th, bringing together some of the best young sailors in ILCA, Feva, and Club 420 classes for two days of action-packed racing and good vibes.
Day one kicked off under a cloudy sky with a light breeze that kept everyone guessing. Thomas Widden, Pequot’s Head Instructor, kept the schedule on track. The harbor start was on time, and while the racers waited on the water for the wind to pick up, they made the most of it—practicing starts, spinnaker handling, and tacking maneuvers. An early lunch break gave everyone a chance to refuel before squeezing in a few races once the breeze started to fill in.
Friday brought slightly better weather, but the wind was still light. As the breeze settled, the fleet hit the water, and in both days they were able to complete a solid slate of races: six for the Feva class, seven for the C420s, and six for the ILCA sailors. The race committee, led by PRO E
van Olmstead, was on top of their game, reading the wind shifts and tweaking the course to keep things fair and fun. When the wind flattened out, they didn’t hesitate to abandon a race, showing their commitment to quality racing.
After taking a break last year to host the JSA Optimist Championships, Pequot was thrilled to welcome back the Invitational Regatta for these three popular classes. The turnout was impressive, with 27 C420s, 20 Fevas, and 31 ILCA boats registered—making for some fierce competition and plenty of excitement on the water.
Cedar Point Yacht Club had plenty to cheer about, with multiple sailors finishing in the top five across the ILCA 4 and 6 classes, as well as showings in the Feva fleet. It was two full days of great sailing and the kind of spirited racing that keeps everyone coming back for more.
All in all, the Pequot Invitational Regatta was a fantastic mix of challenge and fun, which is why this event is a highlight on the summer sailing calendar. Here’s to fair winds next year!
