Cedar Point Yacht Club Junior Race Week 2024

by Erin Wojdaszka, JSA Communications Manager

On Monday July 29th, Cedar Point Yacht Club  held the first day of the 2024 JSA Junior Race Week for the ILCA, Club 420, and RS Feva boat classes.  The day started off beautiful, but calm.  The water was extremely flat with no breeze in sight.  The CPYC race committee made the tough decision to postpone harbor start until 12:30pm. While competitors were waiting to start, there were many activities for them to do on land.  As you looked around the lawn they were all having a blast on land playing volleyball, swimming, talking, eating, playing ping-pong, etc.  Some clubs used the time to gather as a group to talk strategy.

Around 12:30-1pm the breeze started to fill in right out of the harbor with seven knots of wind.  The competitors made their way to their boats and started sailing out during the  harbor start.  The wind was inconsistent throughout the afternoon, but they were able to get a few races in for day one. The CPYC regatta chairs planned a fun night on Monday to finish off their racing with a band and dinner.

Tuesday it was a sunny day with no wind in the morning, but building steadily into the afternoon to about 12 knots for the rest of the day.  Both Monday and Tuesday the Sound had pretty choppy waters with two to three foot waves.  The race committee was able to get a few more races in on Tuesday for a total of five to seven races depending on the boat class.

I talked with one group of competitors who made their way over from Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, Oyster Bay NY.  They shared, “ We were unable to go to Larchmont during race week and we like to get over to this area for some racing each summer, so we decided to make the ride up to Cedar Point to compete.”  Three of their competitors, Jameson Clarke, Julia DeAngelis, and Nikolas Wiggins. raced in the ILCA 4.7 class and finished in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.  Three of the other competitors, Brayden Bratti, Reid Packard, and Nicholas Russo raced, in a ILCA 6 class.

The race committee shared that they had many registrations from a variety of clubs as late as the night before because this CPYC regatta was the final qualifier for the JSA ILCA / Club 420 Champs at Shelter Island YC later in the the week.  Awards were given out on Tuesday afternoon.  To see the results click here.
