2024 Chubb US Youth Keelboat Championship for the Sears Cup
The Long Island area qualifier for the 2024 Chubb will be held on Tuesday, July 2, at The WaterFront Center, Oyster Bay, NY, where four person teams will sail Sonar keelboats provided by WFC.
The teams competing in Oyster Bay will represent six regions (Hudson River, Eastern CT, Eastern LI, Great South Bay, Western LIS, and the Virgin Islands) that constitute the geography known as US Sailing Area B.
Eligible teams will have sailors who have reached their 13th birthday but not their 19th birthday during 2024, be US Sailing individual or family members, and be members of a yacht club, sailing club, community sailing program or other sailing organization that is located within US Sailing Area B (full eligibility details are in the Notice of Race on Clubspot).
At least six Sonars are available and they will be assigned to eligible teams on a first come basis who register online at this link.
The registration deadline is 18:00 on Friday, June 27. After that time, acceptance of late entries will be at the discretion of the organizing authority. At least three teams must be registered to enable the event to be held.
Two of the top finishing teams at The WaterFront Center on July 2 will be invited to represent Area B at the Chubb in San Diego, Calif., where San Diego Yacht Club is hosting the 2024 Chubb US Youth Championship for the Sears Cup from August 5th to August 8th. Up to 22 teams, each with four crewmembers, will compete in J/22 boats provided by SDYC.
What’s the history of the Chubb regatta?
This year marks the 103rd anniversary of the inaugural Sears trophy regatta in 1921 for competition among juniors at Massachusetts yacht clubs. Eligibility was broadened in the following year to include yacht clubs such as Larchmont and Seawanhaka Corinthian on Long Island Sound. Today, sailors race in boats provided by US Sailing and the event host to ensure the quality of the equipment and a level playing field. Coaching is provided for all competitors by US Sailing Coaches.
