Powerboat Certification Courses in 2025 at SUNY Maritime College, Bronx NY, are open for registration.


Use the Additional Info link above to view information and register for any of these upcoming courses (dates are the first day of a course):
  • Safe Powerboat Handling (two days, includes training for the the US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling certificate (which meets the NY State Safe Boating Certificate requirements): Mar 15-16, Apr 5-6, May 10-11, Jun 14-15, Sept 13-14.
  • Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling (one day). Requires a valid state boating safety certificate: Mar 1, May 18, Jun 21, Sept 6.     <For those who need to complete that prerequisite, view available NY State approved 8-hour courses that may be available before the course at SUNY Maritime or at other sites at  https://parks.ny.gov/boating/education.aspx >
  • Safe Powerboat Handling + USCG Launch Tender/Limited Master (two days, includes training for the the US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling certificate (which meets the NY State Safe Boating Certificate requirements) and the SUNY Maritime College Launch Tender license (which exempts you from the USCG exam when applying for a Limited Masters or Limited OUPV Launch Tender License): Mar 9-10, Apr 13-14, May 4-5, Jun 1-2, Oct 5-6.
If these dates are not suitable, get a group of 6-12 people interested in improving their powerboat handling and request SUNY to schedule a class at your own club. Certified instructors can come to your club, or your group can go to the SUNY Maritime Campus on a convenient date. Coaches may submit a Team Application for their team(s) by the early entry date of April 4, 2025. Later application will be subject to availability. 

The event will be a four-boat against four-boat team race. For those teams having five competitors, any four may compete in a race, and the fifth competitor shall remain in the area designated for coaches from the warning signal until that race has been completed.

If there is sufficient interest, less experienced teams may be offered the opportunity to sail the entire event in the Silver Fleet. Teams electing to compete in the Silver Fleet will only compete against other teams in the Silver Fleet for the duration of the event.

Sites in Long Island Sound typically appear in the spring, early and late summer, and fall and may be seen through the Additional Info link above). In the late fall and winter, the in-person courses are given only at warm venues. If an upcoming course date does not appear on the above link, that course is sold out. Contact US Sailing at the above email with any questions.

The US Sailing Level 1 Instructor course is divided into two sections: 

- A 3-day in-person section of the Level 1 course is approximately 30 hours and students will be evaluated on their teaching ability, sailing skills, powerboat handling skills and on-water class management, among other topics.

- A self-guided online introduction section of Level 1. The self-guided section allows participants to learn at their own pace and includes no scheduled interaction with an Instructor Trainer. This online course must be completed prior to attendance at the 3-day in-person section. US Sailing recommends that the in-person section is attended within three months of the online course completion for maximum retention and successful completion.

Basic Keelboat Instructor Course - Various Sites



The Basic Keelboat Instructor Course is a 3-day evaluation allowing experienced keelboat instructors to test and evaluate their teaching and sailing skills. Candidates should anticipate single-handing a keelboat while demonstrating competency in sailing off a dock, mooring or slip, tacking, jibing, stopping, backing the boat and returning to the dock, mooring or slip. Basic Keelboat Instructor Candidates must also be able to present material in a classroom environment with ease. To become a US Sailing Instructor, a candidate must be a confident and competent sailor able to sail anywhere in the U.S. and handle the vast range of situations and different models of boats encountered in sailing courses.

Level 2 Smallboat Instructor Course - Various Sites



The Level 2 Instructor Workshop focuses on developing knowledge and skill in teaching sail theory, sail controls, introductory management skills, spinnaker and trapeze use (and instruction) and powerboat operation for emergency situations. Safety awareness is a major component of this course, with instruction on how to address capsize recovery, or prevent entrapment while operating a powerboat. It is a certification level course that combines classroom and on the water education.
