The sixth annual Viva La Sound is a free, family-friendly festival celebrating community and environmental stewardship. The event features interactive booths from 30+ local environmental partners, food from local restaurants, plus hands-on activities like face painting, mural-making, live music, eco-tours, book readings, and more.

Sailors of all skill levels are welcome. There is some coaching out on the water with pre and post race briefings to help sailors understand what to expect and what happened out on the water.

Level 3 Sailing Program Management Course - online ten days

For the ten-day course starting Oct 4, the instructor is Jane Millman, Executive Director at Brendan Sailing in Maryland, who received the Outstanding Organizational Leader Award for 2025 from US Sailing.

For the ten-day course starting Nov 13 the instructor is Jen Guimaraes, who has previously served as the Youth Education Manager in US Sailing’s Youth Department.

The US Sailing Small Boat Level 3 Head Instructor Certification Course, is designed to support sailing instructors and program managers who are either making the transition to a leadership role in their programs or growing their management skills in their current role. This course is also available for parents and volunteers who want to better manage their sailing programs but do not want or need to receive a certification.

This course contains information on how to manage more effectively, problem solve, continue to create a quality learning environment for their students and sailing staff, and where to find additional resources. Topics covered in the course include: classroom and on-the-water teaching techniques, risk management, safety issues, curriculum planning, advanced team building techniques, ethical concerns, and much more. 

The online course is spread over ten days. The course consists of five 40-minute live webinars and includes short presentations. The other days are self-paced and consist of video content, group discussion and posts, assignments, quizzes and a final test. Students should expect to spend 20 hours on course work over the ten days.

Dates at course sites in other regions, like eastern Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and northern New Jersey, may also be available via the Additional Info link above.

Sites in Long Island Sound typically appear in the spring, early and late summer, and fall and may be seen through the Additional Info link above). In the late fall and winter, the in-person courses are given only at warm venues. If an upcoming course date does not appear on the above link, that course is sold out. Contact US Sailing at the above email with any questions.

The US Sailing Level 1 Instructor course is divided into two sections: 

- A 3-day in-person section of the Level 1 course is approximately 30 hours and students will be evaluated on their teaching ability, sailing skills, powerboat handling skills and on-water class management, among other topics.

- A self-guided online introduction section of Level 1. The self-guided section allows participants to learn at their own pace and includes no scheduled interaction with an Instructor Trainer. This online course must be completed prior to attendance at the 3-day in-person section. US Sailing recommends that the in-person section is attended within three months of the online course completion for maximum retention and successful completion.

Safe Powerboat Handling Courses - Bronx NY

Safe Powerboat Handling (open spots remain at Sept 17)
  Two Days - Anyone who is looking to learn to operate a powerboat safely and improve on-the-water boat-handling skills in an on-the-water, hands-on driving and classroom course. Includes training for the the US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling certificate (which meets the NY State Safe Boating Certificate requirements). Dates: 9/19-20.

Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling (waitlist)
  One Day - Anyone who already has their State-Specific Boating Safety Certification and is looking to learn to operate a powerboat safely and improve on-the-water boat handling skills in an on-the-water, hands-on driving course. Date: 10/18 (if you need to obtain the boating safety certificate in advance, a free online course sponsored by the Boat US Foundation can be found at https://www.boatus.org/newyork ).

If these dates are not suitable, get a group of 6-12 people interested in improving their powerboat handling and request SUNY to schedule a class at your own club. Certified instructors can come to your club, or your group can go to the SUNY Maritime Campus on a convenient date. Contact SUNY Maritime Waterfront department at Waterfront@SunyMaritime.edu or 718-409-2992.  Or hire a local trainer from this list of certified powerboat instructors.





Safe Powerboat Handling + USCG Launch Tender/Limited Master
   Two days, includes training for the the US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling certificate (which meets the NY State Safe Boating Certificate requirements) and the SUNY Maritime College Launch Tender license (which exempts you from the USCG exam when applying for a Limited Masters or Limited OUPV Launch Tender License). Dates: TBD not offered now.

This meeting includes the presentation of JSA's annual special-recognition and season-series awards, and the General Meeting of the representatives of JSA member programs. 

The meeting is an opportunity for program leaders to discuss summer 2026 and plan for 2027. The JSA board is actively interested in your thoughts and ideas and wants to encourage new topics / issues to be brought to the forefront. In addition, the annual JSA board election will be held.

We encourage attendance by junior committee members, event organizers, race organizers, parent volunteers, sailing directors, head instructors, and others who represent each JSA member organization. To assure sufficient seating, please register individually for the meeting, suggest topics for the discussion and indicate if you will attend in person or virtually by using the Additional Info link above.
