  • JSA LIS Midwinter Meeting 2019 [Back To Gallery]

    Special guests at the JSA of LIS Midwinter Meeting on March 9 were Carmen & Emma Cowles. Following their back to back wins at the 2017 and 2018 World Sailing Youth Champs, and being honored as US Sailing's 2018 Rolex Yachtswomen of the Year, Carmen & Emma are now planning a campaign for the 2020 Olympics, which is described at their website https://thecowlestwins.com

    Janet Grapengeter, JSA vice chair, discussed updates to the US Sailing SafeSport certificatiion procedures
    Alex Helfand, JSA vice chair, was introduced by Mary von Conta as her successor when she retires later this year, following her many years of service as the US Sailing Regional Training Coordinator for the Fairfield and Weschester county region
    MacKenzie McGuckin, sailing director at The WaterFront Center, discussed the benefits of incorporating the US Sailing STEM program called REACH into junior sailing programs. #USSailingReach
    John Whipple and Chris Deak, from the Darien Junior Sailing Team, were excited to win the door prize raffle that included an Instructor Course Gift Certificate donated by US Sailing, together with two #USSailingReach Educator Guide books and a Student Logbook
    Curt Johnson, president of Save the Sound, described how continuous efforts have resulted in improved water quality in Long Island Sound
    Joseph DiMaggio, member engagement director at CFE/Save the Sound, described a pilot program that junior sailing programs may use to support marine edication and environmental cleanup.
    Spike Lobdell, president of New England Science & Sailing Foundation, encouraged junior programs to think of safety as essential to everything they do each day
    Peter Becker, president of Young American Sailing Academy (with Jonathan Ash and Meg Leary) described his enhanced big boat sailing activity for all juniors in the Long Island Sound region
    Nick Hayes, author of the book Saving Sailing, gave the keynote: A Sailing Revolution is Underway - how leading organizations are responding to create lifetime sailors

    US Sailing's 2018 Rolex Yachtswomen of the Year, Carmen & Emma Cowles, were congratulated by Richard West and Janet Grapengeter during the JSA Midwinter Meeting at Larchmont Yacht Club, where they first learned to sail
    US Sailing's 2018 Rolex Yachtswomen of the Year, Carmen & Emma Cowles enjoyed describing their views about the value of receiving initial training from the junior program at Larchmont Yacht Club, with advanced coaching from the LISOT sailing team at the training venues provided by many local yacht clubs on Long Island Sound.
